Stadler vs. Frankenberger: different paths, same goal

It was billed as a debate, and has probably not least because of the visibility of the two discussants, Dr. Max Stadler (FDP) and Sebastian Frankenberger (ÖDP) attracted nearly 100 participants Sunday evening. But after a lively half hour debate was clear: between two smart people who are basically in agreement about the goal of their actions, it can not be a thrilling fight. The result was an informative evening on "more democracy" - nothing more, nothing less.

Weniger schwierig war da bereits die Aufgabe des Moderators: Karl-Heinz Hasenöhrl, Werbefachmann und Betreiber eines virtuellen Polit-Stammtischs namens „Wahlinfo“, blieb im Endeffekt neben einer kurzen Vorstellung der Diskutanten die Rolle eines Wort-Erteilers. Das lag im Wesentlichen an den wenig streitlustigen Politikern, die sich nach einem öffentlichen Briefwechsel via Medien vor Wochen geeinigt hatten, die Debatte zum Thema „Mehr Demokratie“ von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu führen. Sebastian Frankenberger, der die in Passau und in Bayern schon mehrfach erprobten Instrumente Bürger- und Volksentscheid gerne auf Bundesebene übertragen möchte, stellte seine Pläne vor. Man müsse die Bürger vor Großprojekten wie zum Beispiel Stuttgart 21 einbinden, dann komme es gar nicht erst zu Situationen wie der in Baden-Württemberg, wo die Landtagswahl in wenigen Wochen, die über die gesamte Politik von vier Jahren entscheiden soll, auf dieses eine Thema reduziert werde. Sein Credo: Bei grundsätzlichen Entscheidungen vorher das Volk fragen, dann ist es für die Politik leichter, Details zu klären.
Max Stadler räumte ein, dass auch er ein Anhänger von Formen direkter Demokratie sei, doch habe zum Beispiel der von Frankenberger initiierte Volksentscheid zum Rauchverbot required for a constitutional amendment can move into the distance.
